About Ian Ross

San Francisco
-ARTIST, COLLECTOR, CURATOR

Ian Ross is a San Francisco–based artist working across a wide range of disciplines, including murals, ceramics, installation art, and painting.

Deeply connected to nature, he creates abstract works inspired by the forests and beaches of Northern California, while his painting style draws upon his background in ceramics, allowing him to engage sensitively with the textures of materials such as paint and canvas throughout the creative process.

Immersed in an intuitive approach to creation, he works in harmony with nature, expressing its inherent stillness through his art.

Ian Ross

Originally from Marin County, just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, and raised as a third-generation member of an artistic family, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics from California State University before beginning his creative career in the culturally vibrant city of San Francisco.

While travelling the world through his creative practice, he encountered graffiti—a form of expression commonly associated with street art—which would become foundational to his current style, and inspired by its raw, powerful energy, his work evolved from the materially constrained medium of ceramics into a more liberated form of painting, allowing for a direct expression of spirit and energy.

Ross’s sensibility—both energetic and finely attuned—has been shaped by the rich natural environment of California, and through more than two decades as a surfer, he has been both nurtured and tested by the ocean, developing a deep connection with its colder, more challenging waters and the raw intensity of nature, embodying a spirit of counterculture; this unique perspective, where natural forces and innovation coexist, resonates strongly with the progressive ethos of Silicon Valley, where he has created numerous works for leading technology companies such as Facebook and Google, earning recognition as a “tech/start-up artist” known for work infused with vitality and innovation.

Through his deep engagement with nature and communities around the world, he has developed a strong commitment to education and is active across various non-profit initiatives, including his Youth Workshop, where he educates young people aged 6 to 18 on themes such as ethics, community, the relationship between urban life and nature, and the importance of art.
